Photographer Anne Weathers Ritchie

"pink step 3," by Anne Weathers Ritchie.

Anne Weathers Ritchie, a native of Peterborough, New Hampshire, has lived in Maine since 1982. Educated at Middlebury College in Vermont and le Sorbonne in Paris, France, she returned to New England as admissions director at the Williston Northampton School. She writes:

My work at the Northampton School sparked a desire to assist high school students in need of challenge or a change with regards to their secondary school experiences. I became the first educational consultant in Maine and continue to work with teenage students seeking alternative educational options to traditional public schools. Although I continue to work in this profession, I've had a lifelong interest in and affinity for photography, and it has become an increasingly fulfilling component of my life.

My fascination with photography and its possibilities was triggered at an early age. As I clicked away with my camera, it became evident to me that my initial perceptions of scenes have usually ended up including elements whose presence might not have been obvious at the outset, a surprise to the eye and spirit. For me, photography involves not only seeing but feeling the essence of my surroundings. In my choice of subject matter, I've focused on the outdoors and natural subjects found in abundance as I enjoy all the activities of my day, always with camera in hand. Now the digital age of photography has permitted me to explore images of familiar surroundings and everyday life in whatever direction my imagination and creativity allow, without the constraint of having to wait for a printed version to prove the success, or not, of the shot.

I live part time in Freeport, Maine, and part time in Farmington, Connecticut. I am an avid kayaker, gardener and student of yoga. The influence of my love of the water and the rich earth, coupled with the life that comes from them, is certainly apparent in the images I frame in my photographic work.
