Historical portrayal of Theodore Roosevelt

2 to 4 p.m.
Miss Porter's School, Leila Dilworth Jones Building,
54 Main Street
Parking is available on Miss Porter's campus, entering from Main or Garden streets.
A donation if $5 is requested for adults; admission for students is free.

Gordon Williams, a lecturer and retired history teacher from Trumbull, CT, will present a program on the achievements and personality of Teddy Roosevelt.

Roosevelt's sister,  Anna Roosevelt Cowles, lived on Main Street in Farmington, in the house called "Oldgate." She was the wife of Admiral William Sheffield Cowles, a naval officer and diplomat. President Roosevelt visited the town and his sister's home on October 22, 1901. His visit included a carriage ride, lunch with U.S. senators, inspection of an oak tree planted on the town green in memory of President William McKinley, and a hike up Rattlesnake Mountain. On October 23, 1901, the Hartford Courant reported:

"Yesterday and last night the ancient and beautiful town of Farmington was honored by the presence of the President of the United States .... At the station a number of townspeople were assembled and they cheered the President as he left the train. Mrs. Cowles, the President's sister, was also on the platform and extended a warm greeting to her brother. ... On the way from the station the President remarked the beautiful scenery of the mountain and meadows disclosed and spoke enthusiastically of the attractive homes that line the borough street. ... The President's visit to Farmington will long live in the memories of the people, and will take high rank among the interesting traditions of the village."
